A Crossroads of Empires: Roman, Byzantine & Ottoman
People have used the hot mineral springs around Vetren for healing since ancient times, long before the Roman baths were built. Indigenous Thracians established a sanctuary here to the Three Nymphs—the divine protectors of healing waters.
Following the Roman conquest of Thrace, Emperors Nero and Trajan formalized the complex into the fortified imperial city of Aquae Calidae (later renamed Thermopolis in Greek). The site featured monumental cold bath chambers (frigidarium), warm chambers (tepidarium), and hot steam pools (caldarium) fed directly by natural 42°C thermal conduits.
In 705 CE, Byzantine Emperor Justinian II ceded the thermal resort to the Bulgarian Khan Tervel in gratitude for military support. In 1206, Emperor Henry of Flanders led the Latin Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade in pillaging and burning the city to the ground.
Three centuries later, in 1562, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent visited the ruins seeking relief for his severe gout. Restored to health by the mineral waters, the Sultan commissioned a lavish marble-lined domed hammam directly over the Roman foundations, which still stands intact today.
Visitor Experience & Multimedia 3D Projection
Today, you can combine the archaeological site with a visit to the modern thermal facilities:
- The 3D Mapping Projection: Inside the restored marble hammam of Suleiman the Magnificent, a 25-minute immersive 3D video projection is mapped across the historic dome and marble floor, dramatizing the legends of the Thracian Nymphs, Emperor Justinian, and the Crusader sack of 1206.
- The Archaeological Trail: Wooden boardwalks take you over the excavated remains, with views down into Roman hypocaust heating flues, Byzantine defensive walls, and early Christian structures.
- Public Geothermal Drinking Fountains: I usually tell visitors to bring an empty water bottle if they want to try the mineral water from the public taps. Free public taps outside the museum dispense fresh 42°C mineral water rich in fluorine, sulfur, and bicarbonate ions.
